A local chiropractor said there are common ways for people to spot and treat common signs of stress.

April Pugsley, 32, was having her stress levels measured this week.

"I carried mulch this weekend," she said. "I'm sure we're going to see that showing up on my stress test as well."

The test displays areas of spinal tension or misalignment in red, indicating hot spots. Once Pugsley's test is complete, the doctor will use the results to determine where to make adjustments along the spin.

"We're measuring what's called the autonomic nervous system," said Dr. Lyle Koca of Koca Chiropractic Clinic. "That regulates the glands, organs and blood vessels of your body, and we're looking for what's called a pattern or a bunching there."

He said one of the most common causes of physical stress is vertebral misalignment.

"Stress isn't what happens to your body. Stress is what happens as your body reacts to what's happening," he said.

He said misalignment can lead to other problems.

"Fatigue, lack of sleep, worry and digestive disorders," he said.

Pugsley said she suffered from fatigue and just didn't feel well. She said that dealing with her stress in this new way has changed her life.

"You'll immediately notice an increase in energy level and you'll also start to sleep better," she said.

"Research is research," Koca said. "The results are what matters."
